Why does it'll auto absorb?

I just wanted to know if there was a way around the whole thing being absorbed. I only want the part that breaks away to be absorbed.
I'm half way through a big build and it's left me stumped. I'm not sure if this is intentional or a flaw in the game.
Any help would be much appreciated
