So what happens, when it hits it causes a hull breach, the water floods in making more weight. displacement is pretty much how much water a boat, well displaces. it help it stay afloat among other things if the displacement is not enough for the weight, your sunk. when the water goes in, it overflows the displacement and reduces it, making you sink like a rock.
